A Message from the Founder – The Season of Gratitude
Dear Community,
This November, I am reminded that gratitude is one of the most powerful forms of healing. At MHCNJ, we are deeply thankful for the trust placed in us by the children and families we support.
This season, I am also proud to share that MHCNJ continues to meet expectations and move above and beyond as we expand throughout New Jersey. Each county has its own pace, customs, traditions, and heart — and learning to understand these unique communities has strengthened our approach and connection. It’s what makes this little state, with a huge heart, truly great.
Gratitude is more than a feeling; it’s a practice that builds resilience, strengthens connection, and reminds us that together, we can accomplish anything.
To quote Rudy Tomjanovich, “Never underestimate the heart of a champion.”
Warm regards,
Sean S. Lee, LCSW
Founder & Clinical Director
Program Spotlight: The Power of Appreciation in Therapeutic Growth
Research shows that practicing gratitude improves emotional regulation and strengthens relationships. Within MHCNJ’s IIC and BA programs, our clinicians are integrating “gratitude reflections” into sessions — helping youth recognize small victories, express appreciation, and build self-confidence.
When we model gratitude, we teach hope.
Community Focus: Giving Thanks & Giving Back
This Thanksgiving season, MHCNJ encourages families to participate in community giving.
Small acts — a thank-you note, volunteering, or simply checking on a neighbor — can create lasting ripples of kindness.
The Community Food Bank of New Jersey is a great example of the reciprocal power of giving back through volunteerism while also serving as a reliable resource for individuals and families in need. Where there’s joy, there is hope — and what better time to share the gift of support than this season of gratitude?
Team Highlight: Lisa Ward, BA – The Heart of Consistency
Lisa Ward embodies the values of reliability and compassion. Her dedication to the families she serves reminds us that consistency builds trust, and trust builds transformation. Her colleagues describe her as “steady, grounded, and always ready to help.”
Lisa’s approach demonstrates that gratitude in action — showing appreciation through presence — is one of the greatest gifts we can offer.
Wellness Tips of the Month – Practicing Gratitude at Home
· Start a gratitude jar: Each family member writes one thing they’re grateful for each day.
· Limit screen time: Set clear limits on recreational screen time and enjoy screen-free mealtimes.
· Express thanks out loud: Verbal appreciation reinforces emotional connection.
· Involve children in healthy meal planning: Encouraging kids to help prepare meals fosters independence and compassion — essential building blocks for helping others in need.
Gratitude turns everyday moments into opportunities for joy and connection.
